Understanding Congenital Heart Disease: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Image
Congenital heart defects refer to defects in the heart that children are born with. These are one of the most common congenital defects globally. In India too, 200,000+ children are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD). These are the numbers of the cases that are recorded – there maybe many more which go undiagnosed and hence untreated. Only 25 per cent of the children diagnosed with a congenital heart defect are able to get the required treatment. A lack of awareness and access to resources are the biggest challenges in children getting timely treatment. Organisations like Genesis Foundation, a congenital heart foundation India has been taking steps to both build awareness and provide financial treatment to those who cannot afford the cost of treatment. The treatment for CHD is expensive and families that do not earn enough to meet their daily needs have to depend on funds they receive as a congenital heart disease donation to support the treatment. Sanjay Modi’s Life-Altering Experience With the Genesis Foundation

This is a series of blog posts by eminent people from different walks of life focused on the act of ‘giving’, talking about their experiences and how ‘giving’ adds value to their life. The series is a result of experiences curated by Genesis Foundation , a not-for-profit that facilitates medical treatment for critically ill underprivileged children in the areas of Heart, Cancer & Thalassemia. ‘Giving’ is a strange thing. It ‘gives’ more to the giver than the receiver. I stumbled upon this unlikely truth recently.  Let me go back a bit before I tell you about the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of what I just said. As a professional and a business leader, I began the year with planning the year ahead for my organisation and myself. As a husband, father, son, I also made plans for my family. And yet, something in me was dissatisfied. Will this year go by like last year, and the years before?   Article Sources: https://www.thequint.com/voices/blogs/genesis-foundation-the-art-of-g

Salute Courage of Li’l Fighters With Heart Defects: Sanjay Kapoor

God has been very kind to my family and me – He has given us an opportunity to give back to society in our small way, and that is what we have been doing. However, I often felt that there was so much more that we could do directly and indirectly. And I realised that there is nothing more valuable than contributing one’s own time to good causes. Time is a finite resource, and the choice we make to give a part of it to a cause really makes a difference – not only to the cause, but also to us.  I have been associated with Genesis Foundation for over three years, participating in the fund-raisers, contributing to the cause. As the association grew stronger, so did the urge to do more. And then, on May 11, I woke up to a morning where I set out to meet four critically ill children (between the ages of 4 months to 11 years) suffering from heart disorders, and being supported by GF’s Save Little Hearts endeavour. My fervour was that of an impatient young kid – I couldn’t wait to ge

A Big Fight to Save Little Hearts

Image
Each day I am reminded of how deeply flawed our world is. Power, greed and sometimes sheer neglect has resulted in so much human suffering, it hurts my heart and soul just to think about it. In the midst of all this turmoil, it’s difficult to see the beauty, the magic and the hope that still exists. It does exist, and there are lots of precious moments that allow us to see the world again with optimism and hope for what lies ahead.  I often experienced such moments-the baby yet to be named -and therefore referred as Baby of Rekha. He had undergone a complicated heart surgery about a month ago, and was here that day for a follow up visit. Seeing the little child, barely 3 months old, for the first time was a moment of pure...joy. I watched his mother look at him with awe and pride, it was priceless. He was three days old when he had his surgery, and here he was today, healthy and ready to conquer the world, already a fighter. Miracle baby  Rekha’s baby was born underweight

Save Little Hearts- Experienced a Different Side of Kochi

Image
When you think of Kochi, what comes to mind? A holiday involving backwaters, a wide array of aromatic spices, beaches, exploring Fort Kochi and indulging in a lip smacking South Indian cuisine.  This was my first time in Kochi, and I was exploring a different side. In my mind, something far more important, as I was about to give a piece of my heart away for a cause I truly believe in – Genesis Foundation. I was en-route to Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences.  Throughout my time at Genesis Foundation ( www.genesis-foundation.net ) I work with content, and every month there are a list of stories that I write of the souls of our foundation, our GF Kids. I try and feel for each child and the hardships they as well as their families face. But now I was prepping to make it a ground reality. I was about to meet over ten little lives, that we have saved.  As we arrived, we were greeted by a lovely, smiling Rinku who took us to meet with Dr Krishna Kumar, Clinical Pr
