A congenital heart defect is a common birth defect that affects the structure and functioning of the heart. Some congenital heart defects in children are simple (a hole in the heart) and don't need treatment, whereas others are complex malformations that may require several surgeries performed over a period of several years.
All these problems can affect the breathing, feeding, and weight of the child. An infant with CHD may have the following symptoms:
● Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
● Cyanosis- A bluish tint to the lips, fingernails, and skin
● Shortness of breath
● Tiring quickly upon exertion
● Poor weight gain
There is no known cause of congenital heart defects but experts assume that they may occur when a mishap occurs during heart development soon after conception. Heredity, smoking, drinking alcohol during pregnancy, diabetes, certain medications, and Rubella are some of the major reasons that may result in CHDs in children.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CHDs are a leading cause of birth defect-associated infant illness and death. In a study of neonatal deaths, it was found that 4.2% of neonatal deaths were caused by a CHD. These deaths can be prevented if proper treatment is provided to these children right after their birth.
The term Congenital heart defect is tragic in every sense as it affects both the infant and his/her family. No parents wants his/her child to suffer from such a disease. Successful treatment of a CHD requires highly specialized care, however, not every parent can afford the high medical costs of the treatment and in some parts of our country such facilities are not always easily accessible. This is the reason why most parents lose their child to this disease.
Treatment for severe congenital heart defects is possible but it requires extensive financial resources, including the costs associated with hospitalization and treatment. At Genesis Foundation, our aim is to remove these barriers that are hindering the
heart treatment of underprivileged children.
Genesis Foundation has been providing heart treatment for underprivileged children for many years now. The families that Genesis Foundation works with fall under the salary bracket of Rs. 15,000. Our Foundation, as well as the children with CHDs, also require community support. A serious congenital heart defect can put a tremendous emotional and financial strain on families with low incomes especially families where parents are daily wage workers.
As a human being, it is in our power to help another through difficult times. Therefore, through fund-raising initiatives, the Foundation aims at building a community that whole-heartedly believes in helping the underprivileged. We are committed to spreading awareness through various platforms such as- events, CSR programmes and individual donations. Donations received through the Foundation are used entirely for heart treatment for underprivileged children.
Turn to our foundation, where you can share concerns, donate money, help in fundraising so that we can provide heart treatment for underprivileged children.
