How to Emotionally Prepare Your Child and Family for Heart Surgery?

Let me take you to a hypothetical situation, one fine day god forbid any one of your family members ends up in the hospital, what would be your reaction? Mix of feelings, emotions filled with hope that the family member gets okay. Watching someone you love fight for their health and life is never easy. 

When you even imagine that, not easy right. Getting goosebumps? This is the everyday situation of the parents whose child has been diagnosed with congenital heart defect (CHD) and needs an immediate surgery to cure the same. From the day of the diagnosis to the day of the operation, every day is a ray of hope, seeing their child getting better day by day. 


Whenever a child needs to undergo a surgery, the child might be very curious with list of questions in mind, might be very clueless. The emotional support by the family and parents of tacking the curiosity of the child is must. It is strongly believed that rather than hiding it from the child about the problem, the real solution is finding a better way of explaining which might be right for their age. For example: We shall be going to the doctor to fix the problem of your little heart so that you can enjoy as much as chocolates you want.  Be positive about every step rather than fearing from it. 

The parents are advised to not show to their child that they are upset or anxious, because the little one might be having a lot of questions seeing the facial expression of the parents. They should always stay calm. It is totally okay to express the feelings but for the child undergoing through the surgery the parents must stand as strong pillar. 

It is okay to be more protective towards the child who is going through the surgery but with that never neglect other members and siblings in the family. Make sure to remind them they are loved too and important too. Stay together to make this journey easy. For example: - Let the other family members help you in making a get well soon card or packing the stuff for hospital to show their value.
