Understanding Congenital Heart Disease: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Image
Congenital heart defects refer to defects in the heart that children are born with. These are one of the most common congenital defects globally. In India too, 200,000+ children are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD). These are the numbers of the cases that are recorded – there maybe many more which go undiagnosed and hence untreated. Only 25 per cent of the children diagnosed with a congenital heart defect are able to get the required treatment. A lack of awareness and access to resources are the biggest challenges in children getting timely treatment. Organisations like Genesis Foundation, a congenital heart foundation India has been taking steps to both build awareness and provide financial treatment to those who cannot afford the cost of treatment. The treatment for CHD is expensive and families that do not earn enough to meet their daily needs have to depend on funds they receive as a congenital heart disease donation to support the treatment.   The end of the year festive season is here now, and we all are excited to make it as memorable as possible. From welcoming guests to buying new clothes, we are all privileged enough to fill each day with happiness and enthusiasm. While we have been busy making our festive season a memorable one, let’s not forget the plight of the parents of the children who are born with a hole in the heart. Congenital heart defects (CHD) are one of the leading causes of infant mortality. In India more than 200,000 children are born with a congenital heart defect every year. Of these, about one-fifth are likely to have serious defect, requiring an immediate intervention in the first year of life. Most of the parents of the children who are diagnosed with CHD cannot afford the cost of the live-saving treatment and hence often need our support to save their child’s life.   To help these children battle CHD get a chance at life, you can donate to support free heart surgery for poor inIndia . A Ray of Hope: How Screening Camps are Providing Children with Congenital Heart Defects Access to Life-Saving Treatment.

Access to healthcare continues to remain a big challenge in countries like India. While the government has played a significant role in improving this to a large extent, there continue to exist many areas where people have limited or no access to specialized healthcare. This is especially true when one talks of congenital heart defects. Congenital hearts Defects(CHDs) are the leading birth defects in the country. Inspite of that awareness regarding the same is very less leading to a delay in diagnosis and treatment. The treatment for these defects continues to remains expensive and there are not many facilities that offer freeheart surgery for poor in India . With improvements in medicine, most children born with a CHD can live a near normal life, given they receive a timely diagnosis and treatment. However, since awareness remains low and the number of pediatric cardiac care centers remain low, not many children are able to get detected on time. Not only are the pediatric cardia

Corporate Donations: Giving Back to Society

Image
What are corporate donations? To put it simply, it is donations from a corporate to a   charity or a nonprofit organization to help them achieve their organization’s mission. This, in turn, benefits the entire society as we have enabled them to create better opportunities for people. Charity can be given in several ways; the simplest is donating to organisations that support the lesser privileged . Corporate charity donations are an integral part of giving donations in general and should not be overlooked, especially because they allow charities to work with a sustained flow of funds allowing them to implement work that has a large-scale impact. Now, what are the benefits? It might seem more meaningful to simply provide for those in immediate need, such as the destitute. While this itself should not be shunned, it is equally important to consider organisations that work in other areas as well such as education, healthcare, skilling etc. Why? Simply put, these organizations exist

How corporate donations to charity are saving lives?

Image
In a world, where people are partitioned by their economic status and their position in the societal hierarchy, change makers have transformed nonprofits into the flag bearers of philanthropy. Despite doing so much for the society, many of us aren't willing to make donations to these NGOs to help them amplify their flow of funds. Hence, it is critical for organisations to step up corporate donations to nonprofits .   India was the first nation to mandate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for companies legally. Due to this, corporate donations to nonprofits act as an aid in tackling problems at scale. Providing for a nonprofit does not only benefit the NGO but also the provider. Since 2014, when the revolutionary government decision regarding CSR was made, corporate donations have seen a surge in number. When the world was recovering from the pandemic, it was corporate donations that made a colossal impact in the sphere of nonprofits. India is a country with more than three mill

Psychosocial Aspects of Congenital Heart Defect Treatment: Supporting Patients and Families

Image
Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are a group of structural abnormalities in the heart that are present at birth. They are among the most prevalent birth abnormalities, affecting around 1 in 100 infants. As one can imagine, since this condition affects children from birth, the parents and the child go through a lot of challenges – medical, financial, emotional, psychological, social and many more. A diagnosis and timely congenital heart defect treatment can give most of these children a chance to live a near normal life. However, the journey is difficult, and these families need a lot of emotional and psychological support to stay strong. Congenital Heart Disease Treatment frequently includes surgical procedures, drugs, and continuing medical attention. Going through a medical diagnosis, accepting that their child has a defect in the heart is by no means easy. To add to that going through the medical procedure with their young child is emotionally overwhelming for any parent.  Th

The role of NGOs in improving the congenital heart defects landscape in India

Image
Congenital Heart defects are the most common birth defects in the world and in India. And yet, not many people are aware of this leading defect both among the general masses and the medical fraternity which forms the first line of medical care servicing people across the country.  In India every year more than 200,000 children are born with a heart defect. The burden of disease is so massive that the management of this condition will require a collaborative effort by the Government, corporate sector, Children’s Healthcare Foundation and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOS).  There are a few NGOs who have been working for the last many decades to create am impact in this often overlooked yet critical health concern. Genesis Foundation and the Children Heart Foundation are some of these. The main areas where these NGOs have been able to create a huge impact are: 1) Build Awareness: awareness about congenital heart defects is scanty amongst the general population. When this disease hi

Reaching Out to Those in Need – What You Can Do To Help a Family With a Child who has a Congenital Heart Defect.

There are times in our lives, when we seem to have settled down professionally and personally and we think of helping others in some way or the other. At other times there are occasions in our families, milestones, like birthdays or anniversaries where we feel like helping someone who has not been as fortunate as us and look for areas where we can provide support. Donation for children is one area that immediately comes to the forefront during such times. Many underprivileged children in countries like India, continue to fight many challenges in multiple areas such as education, health, nutrition, growth and development. Many children in particular, face challenges in accessing essential life saving interventions which can help save their lives.  Congenital heart defects is one such area where many children continue to be deprived of access to important interventions only because their families did not have the money  to support the treatment. Congenital heart defects are one of the l
